FAQ ( Frequently Asked Questions )

Return to OUISoft Home Page

Q: I can't change the way OUI sorts my message threads, i.e: it sorts them Last to First, and I'd like the order reversed, or sorted by Subject or From.  I selected newsgroup | configuration, and that portion of the dialog box is grayed out.

A:  That box, within the newsgroup configurations dialog box is an indicator only, and changes can not be made there.  To change the sort order, Right Click on the list of message threads, mouse over "Sort" and select your sort criteria.

Q: I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows XP.  Will I still be able to use OUI?

A: You bet!  OUI is a 16 bit program, which means it still runs on win 3.x.  (That is important, because there a lot of computers connected to the Internet still, running older versions of Windows).  However, due to the skill of the program's engineers, and a little bit of luck in how Microsoft has built their later versions, OUI has worked with most installs of each Windows operating system.   We have tested OUI with Windows XP Home and XP Professional, and have found no problems.

What we do suggest is that you opt for XP Professional, as it is the better of the two new options.  Also, we suggest that you install OUI and run it.  If it works, leave it alone.  If you have any problems with OUI running in XP, call up the Software Compatibility Wizard, and set OUI to Windows 95 mode.  This should cure any problems that you might have.

Q: I think I have discovered a Y2K+1 bug in OUI. Email and newsgroup messages received fro another OUI user or messages I send and save a copy of seem to show a date of xx/xx/1901 and are threaded to the bottom of the message list.

A: Yes, it is indeed a Y2K+1 bug. Note that it only effects OUI to OUI users and saved messages. The message header is written correctly and shows up just as it is supposed to on other software. Since we have no one working on future versions of the 16 bit version of OUI, we have contracted out a fix for this minor problem. We can't tell you when, or if, a fix will be available for this problem.

Q: I notice that a number of people's addresses in newsgroups are changed; e.g. bobl@nospam.wind2.com with a note to remove the 'nospam' part in any replies - so, if a spammer picks up your address from a newsgroup, it will be incorrect and you won't receive any spam messages. What's the trick to do this?

A: All you need to do is change your e-mail address in the "Primary E-mail Address:" textbox of the "User Information" dialog box. To get to this dialog box, select File|User Information from the OUI main menu. Then, change it to anything you wish. Lastly, change your newsgroups' sig files so that they tell whomever is reading your message that they will need to edit the return address before sending a reply to you.

(added information:)
By way of correction to the above, which is what you see in help files all over the Internet, OUI user John Moreno offers the following "more correct" way:

The address <bobl@nospam.wind2.com> may belong to someone else,
<bobl@nospam.wind2.com.invalid> can't.

The top level domain ".invalid" has been reserved and is guaranteed to never be
issued to anyone (per RFC 2606).

The current USEFOR drafts says that the From must be either one that
the poster is authorized to use, or end in the top level domain
".invalid".

Since ".invalid" is guaranteed never to be deliverable, programs (mail
or news readers, dns or smtp servers) can check for it and reject it at
that point without handing it off to someone else (in the case of mail
and news readers this means that the user is informed before any
network traffic is generated).

Q: Since Jan. 1, 2000, e-mail messages I send have not had the correct date (or appear to have no date at all. E-mail I receive from other OUI users has a date of DD/MM/00, and these messages thread to the bottom of the received messages list view.

A: OUI was bitten by the Y2K Bug. Unfortunately, our Y2K testing wasn't as good as it should have been. Fortunately, a patch was easy. On our main web page, at www.ouisoft.com we have posted a small zip file called y2kfix.zip. It contains two dll files and a readme.txt file. Downloading and installing per the instructions in the readme.txt file should correct the problem.

Two further observations about this Y2K problem:

1. These bugs should be fixed for most users now. This bug still exists for some international users. This can usually be worked around by setting your system/ short date style to a different format, preferably with a 2-digit year instead of a 4-digit year. This can be done in the Windows Control Panel Regional Settings Date tab.

2. We have applied the Y2K patch to a new release version of both the Timed Trial Edition and the registered Pro version. Version 1.9.2 contains the bug fix and no other improvements. If you have applied the bug fix files, you do not need to download v1.9.2. If you have downloaded v1.9.2, you do not need to download the bug fix.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I have been using CompuServe for a few years and would now like OUI to be able to download my CompuServe mail. Can I do that?

A: Yes, but you have to specify a Mail-Only password (GO POPMAIL and follow the prompts to change the settings for your mailbox). Once you do that, you will be able to access your mail using OUI, or any other POP3 reader for that matter. Your username is your PA (for example, EPulliam), and your password is what you specified -- not your CompuServe account password.Note that CIS Pop3 mail uses a special Virtual Key encryption of your password to access the server. In Compuserve, download V32SETUP.EXE for Virtual Key setup guidance.

Update July, 1999:

HERE ARE THE LATEST CHANGES TO COMPUSERVE MAIL, EFFECTIVE JULY 20, 1999

(Cut & pasted [and edited] from their e-mail to members)

The new changes to POP3 are:

1 - There will only be one domain!

Your POP3 address (@csi.com) will now be the same as your CompuServe address (@compuserve.com). Only the domain is changing, your Personal Address (PA) will stay the same. The @csi.com domain will be active for a minimum of two years. During this time any mail sent to @csi.com will be directed to your @compuserve.com mailbox. We recommend that during this two-year period that you notify your contacts of your new e-mail address (GO MYADDRESS) and update any printed material that displays your e-mail address.

2 - You will be able to maintain one mailbox with two views! This allows you to access your mail through either the CompuServe Classic client or a POP3 client.

3 - You will be able to change your Personal Address (PA), (GO MAILSET)!

4 - There will be no need to turn-on redirection of mail from your CompuServe account to your POP3 account!

5 - 10MB message size limits will be supported for sending and receiving from the Internet, and member to member! Starting today, if you have a POP3 account and are on NewMail, you have the opportunity to "preview" some of these changes. If you would like to preview the new POP3 environment, you will need to change your POP3 client settings to:

Incoming: pop.compuserve.com
Outgoing: smtp.compuserve.com
Email Address: "user"@compuserve.com (where "user" is either your Personal Address or your CompuServe User Id, such as 12345.678)

Q: I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse and would like to use the center wheel for scrolling in OUI. Is there any way that this can be done in OUI?

A: OUI doesn't directly support that feature of the IntelliMouse, but you can gain that funtionality in OUI by getting a shareware utility called Flywheel. It is currently $10 and can be found at www.plannetarium.com

UPDATED 10/15/00

An alert OUI user tells us that Flywheel is an orphaned product, and its author/distributor is out of business. The program may have been converted to the public domain, or may be under a freeware license. We will attempt to check on this, and post any answers we find.

The Logitech wheel mouse does work well with OUI.

Q: Where can I find a list of public news servers?

A: Go to http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/3959/usenet.html and you will find several lists of public news servers. Or, go to www.yahoo.com and search using the following words: "public access usenet sites".

Q: A strange thing has happened with one of my mailboxes. The icon has a "7" in the lower right corner. This indicates I have 7 unread messages. But in fact I have only 6. I have closed OUI several times and restarted it. But it still insists I have 7 messages.

A: This is a known bug. There probably is another new message that you can't see. The first thing to try is to exit out of OUI and delete all of the .cdx files from your OUI \\data directory. Then restart OUI. If you still have the same problem, please do the following:

When you are viewing the Messages list, just do a search without putting anything into the search criteria fields. In other words, click on the mail icon where this problem is occurring, click on the Messages button, open the Search dialog by clicking on the Search button, and then click on the Search button that is in the Search dialog. You will then see a list of all the messages in OUI's database for that mailbox. (You can also do this in newsgroups.) Then look through the list for one that hasn't been read yet and double-click on it to view it.

Q: My ISP's servers require me to enter a username and password every time I access any of the newsgroups on their news server. I found the place where to put the username and password, and they are now working fine, but OUI is now also sending the username and password for the alt.oui.support newsgroup on news.privatei.com!. How can I fix this?

A: Go into the Settings dialog for that newsgroup and click on the Advanced Options button. Then click once on the "Override News Group... " checkbox. Now, remove any text from the username and password fields.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I tried to use the '2-pass' mail system in OUI, but OUI told me that my mail server doesn't support the '2-pass' system. What does this mean?

A: The 2-pass mail system that OUI uses is called UIDL. It allows the software you are using (OUI, in this case) to download e-mail headers first so that you can decide whether you wish to download the header's full message. UIDL is probably the most common '2-pass' mail system available on mail servers and it is the only one that OUI is currently able to communicate with. If the mail server at your Internet Service Provider (ISP) doesn't use UIDL, then OUI will not be able to use the 2-pass system with your mailbox/mail server. In this case, OUI will tell you this with an error dialog and will then disable the 2-pass system for subsequent online sessions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I have a mail server that supports the UIDL '2-pass' mail system, but OUI has disabled the "Use 2-pass - downloads message headers first" feature in my mailbox's settings. How can I re-enable that feature in OUI?

A: Just type the mail server's name in the "POP Server:" text box and the option will become enabled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: My Spell Checker doesn't work anymore. How do I get it working again?

A: First, make sure that you have it enabled in OUI. To find out, select Configuration|Environment from the main menu. Is the "Check spelling automatically before sending" option enabled (ie. 'checked')? If it isn't, then click on it and the spell checker should now work. If it isn't enabled and it is grayed out, its possible that you are missing the spellmst.dll file (55,040 bytes) that should be in the main OUI directory. If it isn't in the main OUI directory, please check your hard drive for it. If you find it somewhere else, copy it to your main OUI directory and then start OUI. That should fix it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I can't get the workgroup part of command line parameters to work correctly. I have created a workgroup called "daily". I have set the command line to read "c:\\oui\\ouistart.exe /wg:daily /new". When I start OUI from this command line, it performs a NEW pass for all subscribed newsgroups--not just for those in "daily". I have tried reversing the order of the arguments to no avail. Why are ALL of my newsgroups being accessed when I just want to access the newsgroups in my "daily" workgroup?

A: This is usually caused by a case-sensitive issue. The names of workgroups are case-sensitive, meaning that if you create a workgroup called "Daily", then it is different than one called "daily". Therefore, please make sure that you are using the exact name (ie. spelled correctly and same case) of the workgroup in the command line. So in this example, try using the following command line: "c:\\oui\\ouistart.exe /wg:Daily /new". Also, workgroup names that have a space in them (eg. "Daily stuff") cannot be used in the command line.

Q: I have a .jpg file in my download directory that contains a space in its filename. I can't view it or delete it in Windows 3.1 or DOS. I don't have Win95, so what can I do?

(revised 1/1/2000)

A; In either a dos shell or file manager rename using a questionmark to substitute the space.

As in "Oh shoot.jpg": ren oh?shoot.jpg goodshot.jpg

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I just lost one of my .dbf (or .fpt) files - I have a backup from yesterday, but I have no idea how to restore it.

A: You will need to exit out of OUI and delete (from the OUI \\data directory) the set of data files that correspond with the lost file. For example, if the address.fpt file is missing, you will need to delete the address.dbf and address.cdx files. Then, copy the backed-up copies of the lost file's data set (except for the .cdx file) into the OUI \\data directory and rename them so that they have the correct filenames. Continuing with the address.fpt example, you would need to copy and rename the address.dbf and address.fpt files, but not the address.cdx file. Now start OUI. OUI will then create a new .cdx file and everything should run fine now.

Q: How can I change the default news server?

A: First, select Configuration|Login Options from the main menu. Next click on the "News Servers..." button. Then select "Default" from the drop-down menu. The Default Connection Options dialog should now appear. Enter the new news server name into the NNTP Server textbox and enter any other information that is required by the new news server. Then click on OK and OK again.

Next, you will need to reset the High Message Number (HMN) for each of your newsgroups that used to be on the old default news server. (If a newsgroup is located on another news server, such as the alt.oui.support newsgroup, its HMN doesn't need to be reset.) The HMN should be reset either to 1 or to a negative number such as -200 (meaning that the last 200 messages or headers will be downloaded the next time you visit that newsgroup). See the next Q&A below to find out how to reset the HMN.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do I reset the High Message Number (HMN) in a newsgroup(s)?

A: You can either reset one newsgroup's HMN, or all newsgroups' HMNs.

A. One newsgroup - To reset a single newsgroup's HMN, right-click on that newsgroup's icon and select the Configuration item from the little pop-up menu. Then, enter a 1 in the High Message Number box (if you want to download all headers/messages in that newsgroup), or enter a negative number, such as -200 (if you want to download just the last 200 headers/messages in that newsgroup)

B. All newsgroups - To reset all of the newsgroups' HMNs, select Configuration|Newsgroups... from the main menu, click on the "Defaults" button, enter the HMN value that you wish to use [see (a) above] into the High Message Number box, and then click on the Global button to the right of the box. All of your newsgroups will now be using the value that you entered. If there are newsgroups you wish not to be reset, you will need to manually change their HMNs [see (a) above] back to what they were before you reset them, so you may want to write down their values before resetting the HMNs globally.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I try to run OUI I get a GPF while it is integrating the data from a previous online session. How do I fix this?

A: Please exit out of OUI and go into OUI's \\data directory with Win3.x's File Manager or Win95's Explorer. If OUI crashed during the integration of *e-mail* data, then move the icapture.tmp file to another directory. If OUI crashed during the integration of *newsgroup* data, then move the ocapture.tmp to another directory. Now restart Windows (close down any open applications first) and then restart OUI. OUI should open correctly after going through crash recovery.

To view the information in the .tmp file that you moved to another directory, just open it in a text editor/viewer. OUI crashed during the integration of this file because there was something in the file that OUI could not understand. In order for us to fix it, we will need to see the whole .tmp file, so if you can, please send it to support@ouisoft.com.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I'm trying to subscribe to a newsgroup called 'flash', but OUI won't let me subscribe to it. How can I do it?

A: OUI won't let you subscribe to a newsgroup that has only one word, but you can fool OUI by typing in something like 'flash.newsgroup', click on the Subscribe button (which will take you back to the Configure Newsgroups dialog), select the newly added newsgroup from the list, click on the Settings button, and then change the newsgroup's name to 'flash' in the "Full Name:" text box. That should do it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I have two connections existing in dialup networking. Somehow, OUI is now connecting to the wrong connection. How do I change connections in OUI?

A: You can't do this from OUI, but you can it from Win95 itself. Click on the Win95 START button, select Settings, select Control Panel, double-click on the Internet icon, choose the Connection tab, and then select the connection you want to use in the "Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection:" drop-down box.

Q&A's as of March 20, 1997

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Are there any security problems if I download a file attachment? Are there any security problems if I click on a URL hotlink in a message I've downloaded?

A: We see two possible danger spots when using OUI (or any other communication application), unless you take some precautions:

(1) File Attachments - running any file attachment that you aren't familiar with is dangerous! If you don't know the person who sent the attachment to you, don't run it. If you do know the person, make sure they know what the attachment does. Always run an up-to-date virus scanner on any file attachment you receive in e-mail, from newsgroups, from ftp sites, and/or from web sites.

(2) URL Hotlinks - Clicking on a URL hotlink in OUI will cause your web browser to open and go to that URL on the WWW. In theory, the web server associated with that URL may then be able to access your computer through features such as ActiveX and Java. If there are executable files containing viruses on that server and you run one from the web page, it's conceivable that the virus could affect (or infect) your computer even though the virus isn't located locally on your computer. Even if you don't run an executable on that web page, just the fact that you are connected to another computer can be a scary thought. Best rule: Only visit well-known URLs with good reputations!

[NOTE: Neither of the two dangers mentioned above are *caused* by OUI. OUI is just one of many possible communication mechanisms that will allow you to download a file attachment (but won't run it unless you decide to do so) or opens your web browser so that it can go to a specific URL. The actual security issues need to be implemented in the web browsers (since they 'run' the Java scripts and ActiveX) and the operating system itself (eg., Windows 3.1, Win95, Win98 or Windows NT).

Q&A's as of February 12, 1997

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: In the \\oui\\data directory, there is a file with the name 'message.fpt' which seems to be growing indefinitely. It is now about 6MB and has put on about 500kb in the last week. What's the purpose of this file and how can I put it on a diet before it eats up what space I have left on my disk?

A: The message.fpt file contains all of your messages. Do NOT delete it. When you delete messages in OUI, the messages are not yet physically deleted from the database until the database files are 'packed'. Packing, in terms of databases, means that the deleted messages will be physically removed from the database files and then they will be compressed (this is not the same as compressing/archiving files into .ZIP or .ARJ format). A packed database file will always be smaller than it was before the packing. How much smaller depends on how many messages were marked for deletion. This is normal for any database file, whether it be in OUI or another database application.\par \par In OUI, this packing (of the MESSAGE database files) occurs once every 30 closures of OUI. Some of the other database files in OUI are packed twice during this 30-day cycle since they are usually smaller and will take less time for the packing process.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I cross-post a message to more than one newsgroup?

A: When you are in the Compose Window (either replying to a message or composing a new message), click on the Internet Header button (it looks like a dark hand over a piece of paper). Then click on the ellipse button to the right of the "Newsgroups:" text box. You can either select the newsgroups from the "Subscribed Group" list (newsgroups that you have already subscribed to), or enter a newsgroup into the "Additional Groups" text area. When you have finished selecting newsgroups, click on the OK button.

Note: There is currently no way to cross-post newsgroup *files* in OUI, only messages. Please note that crossposting of messages MAY be a violation of some Usenet newsgroup's charters. Read the groups Frequently Asked Questions and charter of the newsgroups before cross-posting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I edit the dictionary files that are used by the SpellChecker?

A: First of all, you can't modify the main dictionary files. You can modify only the dictionary files that you have created. The default dictionary file that you create when you add words to the SpellChecker is called PRIVATE.DIC. There is currently no way to edit a word that you have added, but you can work around this by removing the word and then adding it again with the correct spelling. To edit the dictionaries (ie. remove words), you'll have to first misspell a word in either the Compose or Reply window and then click on the SpellChecker (ABC) button. Doing this will open the SpellChecker dialog box. Next, click on the Options button. Then click on the dictionary that you want to edit (usually the PRIVATE dictionary since that is where the words are added when you add words). Then click on the Edit button. Now you can look through the list of words and remove any that you don't want.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I view an attachment?

A: First, select the newsgroup or mailbox that contains the message/attachment. Next, click once on the Messages button. Then, find the message in the Messages List and double-click on it (messages with attachments will have a green paperclip icon next to them). The message viewer window will then appear. If the message has a decoded file attached to it, you will see an Attachments box in the upper-right corner of the message viewer window. Click on one of the attachments listed (if there are more than one listed) and then click on the Launch button to view it. NOTE: The Launch button looks like a rocket ship.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I double-clicked on a message that has an attachment (denoted by a green paperclip icon), but there isn't an Attachments box in the upper-right corner of the message reader window and/or the Launch button is grayed out.

A: The file that was attached to the message has been deleted from your hard drive. If OUI can't find the file on the hard drive, you can't launch it.

Q&A's as of December 28, 1996

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I create a newsgroup without having to add the news server that it is located on?

A: This can be done by following the steps below (the [ficticious] alt.widget newsgroup on the [also fictictous] news.gizzmo.com news server is used as an example):

1. Select Configuration|Newsgroups from the main menu.

2. Click on the Add button.

3. Enter the name of the newsgroup into the "Search or Specify:" box. For example, enter alt.widget into the box.

4. Click on the Subscribe button.

5. Click on Close and then Close again.

6. Right-click on the newly created newsgroup icon and select Configuration from the little menu that pops up.

7. Click on the Advanced Options button.

8. Enable the "Override News Server" checkbox and enter the news server (where your new newsgroup is located) into the "NNTP Server:" box. For example, enter news.gizzmo.com into the box. Click on OK.

9. Click on OK again.

10. Click on the Close button.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Why can't I get a list of newsgroups from the news.gizzmo.com news server (the fictictious newsgroup used in the above question)?

A: The news server is not public. Therefore, if you try to subscribe to newsgroups besides the newsgroups that the administrator has configured for public access, you will not be able to access them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q&A's as of November 25, 1996

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I just downloaded a couple of messages, but the integration process took a couple minutes. Why did it take so long?

A: This is a function of the size of your OUI databases. The larger the database, the longer it will take OUI (or any other database program) to integrate the newly downloaded data. Also, how long has it been since you ran the defrag utility? You might want to get in the habit of doing this every 30 days or so.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Let's say, I configured newsgroup A to do a two-pass (ie. download headers first). Then in the agents, I configure an agent to look for a few words, such as "video CD", and tell agent to MATCH ANY of the words, and DOWNLOAD found messages. I configure another agent for "card sale" and told the agent to IGNORE these headers when found. My question is, if a subject is "video card for sale", will OUI download or ignore it?

A: The IGNORE task agent takes precedence over all the other task agents, so a "video card for sale" subject would be ignored.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I never use the FINGER function (or, my ISP doesn't support FINGER commands). I would like to remove the FINGER icon from the main screen. Right clicking on the icon doesn't offer a delete function. How do I make this icon disappear?

A: The best way to disable this function, and remove the icon from the screen, is to exit OUI, then rename the file \oui\scripts\oui\finger.dll to ...\finger.sav. This can be accomplished in program manager or Windows Explorer. You can re-establish the feature by renaming it back to \finger.dll

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: There is no delete option when I right click on a mailbox icon. How do I delete a mailbox I no longer want to monitor with OUI?

A: To delete a mailbox, select Configuration|Mailboxes from the main menu bar. Then, in the list of mailboxes, single click on the mailbox you wish to delete and click on the Remove button.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: OUI hung on me today, with the message:

Codebase Error:
#-70
#90621
Reading file:
File4ReadError
C:\OUI\DATA\MESSAGE.FPT

How do I fix this?

A: Please exit out of OUI, and then delete all of the *.cdx files from the \oui\data directory. Then restart OUI. If you still get the same error message, it means that the message.fpt file has become corrupted. You will need to again delete the *.cdx files, then restore the message.fpt and message.dbf, files from your latest backup. The backup files made automatically (if enabled) by OUI are called mbackup.fpt and mbackup.dbf.

If you don't have a backup of these files, your previously downloaded messages are toast (sorry, but that's why you should always allow OUI to do regular backups when it closes down [see the help files]).

If you do not have backups of these files, move (or delete) the message.fpt, message.dbf and message.cdx files from the \oui\data directory. After doing this, OUI should be able to open correctly, but you will no longer be able to access any of your previously downloaded messages.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: In OUI's Agent, there is an option to tell OUI to look in the "TO" field for a string, but I can't get it to work. "FROM" is always active and "TO" is always grayed out. How do I get the "TO" option to work?

A: "TO" is not available in Agents, when applied to a NEWSGROUP, since a newsgroup message is not really sent to a person. It is sent to the newsgroup itself. By using OUI's threading technology, OUI makes it LOOK like a message is being sent to an individual.

In e-mail messages, the message IS being sent to a real person, so the "TO" option is available. OUI realizes that it can not filter for "TO" in newsgroups, and therefore the option is disabled for Agents applied to newsgroups.

Q: If I have a suggestion/comment about OUI or your company, will you listen?

A: You bet we will! We believe that listening to you, our customers, is the only way to know exactly what you want in a product.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What if you didn't listen to the customers?

A: Everybody involved would have a major problem. Why??? Well, if we didn't listen, we wouldn't know what features you want to be implemented in future releases; if we put in our own features, many of you might not purchase the product. If you don't purchase the product, we don't make money. If we don't make money, we can't develop more products for you. Simply stated, "Everybody loses in the end." We will listen.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: If my computer crashes while OUI is open, what should I do?

A: First, try to close down OUI and any other open application in the application's normal way. If this is not possible (for example, if the whole system freezes), try to close down your Windows system (eg., Windows 3.1, Windows 95, etc) by following its instructions. If this is also not possible, you will need to reboot your computer.

After your computer, operating system, and Windows system have restarted, run a disk scanning utility such as ScanDisk or Norton's Disk Doctor on the disk drive where OUI is located (usually the C: or D: drive). Note: Some disk scanning utilities will require you to exit to DOS before running the utility. Allow the disk scanning utility to fix any errors it may find. Then, delete all the .cdx files (*.cdx) from the \\OUI\\DATA directory. Finally, restart OUI. If it opens correctly, you're back in business! If it doesn't, please see the rest of this FAQ file for a specific remedy for the existing problem. If you can't find the remedy here in this file, please contact our tech support personnel and tell them exactly what errors you are seeing.

In the event that a remedy cannot be found, you may be asked to reinstall OUI. This will often remedy the situation if it isn't database related.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: If I am receiving crashes, GPF's, and/or Application Errors, what type of information will the OUI Tech Support personnel need to help me with the problem?

A: We will initially need the following information:\

1. Do you have FILES= set to 70 or greater in your CONFIG.SYS file? If so, how many? If not, please set it to 80. (Note: Even if you are using Win95 or WinNT, this setting has to be set to 80 or more since OUI is still a 16bit application.)

2. How much available conventional memory do you have? To find this, type 'mem /c' at the DOS prompt (without the quotes). This will display information about the amount of used and free memory on your computer. We need to know what it says for "largest executable program size". OUI may have problems when run on a computer that has less than 570k of free conventional memory (before starting \par Windows)

3. How much total RAM do you have in your computer? Common amounts include 4mb, 8mb, 16mg, etc. OUI will have problems if you have less than 8mb of RAM, and may have problems if you have less than 16mb.

4. Do you have a Windows swap file? If so, how large is it? Is it temporary or permanent? If you have Win95 or WinNT, is Windows managing the swap file for you?

5. Did you have other applications open at the time the problem occurred? If so, approximately how many? Please see if the same error(s) occur if you close all other applications besides OUI.

6. Are you using any third party memory management programs such as QEMM or NetRoom? If so, are you running in the Stealth or Cloaked mode? Both Stealth and Cloaked modes hide resources from your applications. When this happens, problems can occur.

7. Are you running any disk compression software? We have found that some problems occur when used on disk drives that have been compressed.

8. If you are having video problems, or if the error messages mention your graphics driver (e.g., 1024_768.drv), please make sure you have the latest (newest) version of your graphics card's video drivers. Contact the manufacturer of your video card for information regarding the latest driver version.

9. Which Windows environment are you using? (e.g., Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, etc.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Should I keep a backup of my OUI data?

A: Yes! In any application where you save data, you should always keep a recent backup of your data. This includes OUI. If your computer crashes while OUI is open, your data may become corrupted. Even if some other application crashes your system, your OUI data is vulnerable due to the complexities of database files. You should periodically back-up your OUI data (everything in the \\OUI\\DATA directory) to prevent a major loss of your valuable data. Our free OUI Scheduler utility allows you to do this backing-up effortlessly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I am using the news.compuserve.com news server and I am receiving the "Newsgroup does not exist" error message. What's wrong?

A: This is caused by the automatic switching of news servers that occurs when you access the news.compuserve.com server. When you access this server, you are routed to one of CompuServe's news servers. Not all the news servers will have the same newsgroups located on each server. So, if you are first routed to one news server, and the next time you go online you are routed to a different news server, the second news server might not have the newsgroup you want. To fix this, use a specific CompuServe IP address (shown in the next answer below) instead of the 'generic' news.compuserve.com, OR get another Internet Service Provider (ISP).

UPDATE: November 17, 1999

Compuserve has recently re-built their news servers, and, according to them as well as reports from our users, their new server (or servers) are synchronized. Note that you can only use the news.compuserve.com news server if you dial in through a Compuserve "node". You may not dial in to your local ISP, then use OUI to access their news server. This is not a bug in OUI, it is a limitation Compuserve has placed on their server. Also, if you use the new Compuserve 2000 service, your only option to access news groups is their software. Again, that's the way they designed their service.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Why do I get a message saying "The message doesn't exist" when using one of the CompuServe news servers, or when using news.compuserve.com as the news server?

A: We have had other reports of information not being downloaded on the CompuServe news servers. This is due to the over-crowding that is occurring on the CompuServe news servers as well as the fact that the CompuServe news servers are not closely linked to each other. In other words, information that appears on one server may or may not eventually make it to the other servers. The best advice we can offer is to experiment among the CompuServe IP addresses until you find the one that works best for you. Here is a list of known CompuServe IP addresses (several of these were provided to us by our users).

These are new (to us) as of February 28th. They may or may not be 'modem pools'. We haven't tested them.

If these still don't work reliably for you, you may want to get a new Internet Service Provider (ISP)

UPDATE: November 17, 1999

The Compuserve upgrade mentioned above should have eliminated this problem as well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Where can I find a new ISP?

A: The best place to find out about ISPs is through word-of-mouth. Ask your friends and coworkers; they may have experience with some of the ISPs in your local area. If not, consult your telephone company's Yellow Pages or White Pages. Also, the following web page is a database that lists over 3000 Internet Service Providers. The list can be searched by name, domain name, country, state, area code, etc.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I am getting multiple Codebase -935 errors in OUI. Now I can't do anything in OUI.

A: This Codebase error means that there is either a corrupt or missing .fpt file. Please make sure you have the following .fpt files in your \\oui\\data directory:

actions.fpt\

address.fpt

catalog.fpt

message.fpt

object.fpt

If one of them is missing, you will need to delete its corresponding .dbf file in the same directory. For example, if actions.fpt is missing, delete actions.dbf. Then, delete all the .cdx files, reboot Windows, and then restart OUI.

If all the above .fpt files are there, then one or more of them is corrupted. To find out which one, move it and its corresponding .dbf file to another directory. Then delete all the .cdx files, reboot Windows, and restart OUI. If OUI runs fine, then you found the bad .fpt file (the last one you moved). If you still have the problem after moving the .fpt and dbf files, move them back into the \\oui\\data directory and move another pair out, repeating the steps in this paragraph. Keep doing this until OUI works correctly.

This error may be a bug in OUI, we are still studying it. It may also just be a problem inherent in creating a database based on downloaded data, which is subject to corruption due to such things as line noise. We will continue to explore each reported example of this behavior in OUI, and will attempt to improve it in a future version. In the meantime, following the instructions below may keep it from happening again.

[Note: MOST USERS WILL NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS. THIS IS ONLY FOR THOSE FEW USERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING REPEATED Codebase ERRORS.]

In Windows 3.x, you'll need to change the 'working directory' in the OUI icon properties to your data's path. Open the Program Group in which the OUI icon is located and click the OUI icon once. Then, press the "Alt" "Enter" keys. The "Working Directory" is the third box down. Change that box so that it shows the path to your data. If your data is in the default directory, it will be "c:\\oui\\data".

In Windows 95/98 or Windows NT, you'll need to change the 'Start in' directory in the OUI icon properties to your data's path. First, if you don't already have a shortcut icon for OUI, right-click on either OUISTART.EXE or NAV20.EXE in Explorer (NAV20.EXE won't display the splash screen) and then select Create Shortcut. Next, drag the shortcut from Explorer to your Win95 desktop. Now that you have a shortcut for OUI, right-click on the Shortcut, select Properties, and then click on the Shortcut tab. Change the "Start in" directory so that it shows the path to your OUI data.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I just opened OUI and now I don't see my newsgroup icons! How can I get them back?

A: Please try the following:

1. Exit out of OUI.

2. Go to your OUI \\DATA directory (usually \\oui\\data) and delete all the files with a .CDX extension. These are the indexes for the databases and they will be rebuilt by OUI the next time you are able to successfully launch the program.

3. Run Scandisk or Chkdsk /f to make sure there are no disk level problems. If Scandisk or Chkdsk find any problems, please let them repair the problems before continuing.

4. Try to run OUI again.

5. If you still don't see your newsgroups, you may be able to use the backups for the OBJECT.* files to recover them. To do this, exit out of OUI and delete all the files with a .CDX extension in your OUI \\DATA directory. Then find the OBJECT.DBF and OBACKUP.DBF files. OBACKUP.DBF is a backup file for OBJECT.DBF. Move, rename, or delete the OBJECT.DBF and then copy OBACKUP.DBF to OBJECT.DBF. Next, you will need to use the same process to replace the OBJECT.FPT with its backup file, OBACKUP.FPT. Move, rename, or delete OBJECT.FPT and then copy OBACKUP.FPT to OBJECT.FPT.

6. Then try to run OUI.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I send a message, I don't see my 'signature' at the bottom of the message. Why?

A: The 'signature' will not be appended to your message until the message has been sent/posted online. You will only see the signature if you download the message.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I have set the radio button in this newsgroup to save outgoing messages, but don't see them in the message window after sending them. Where have they gone?

A: Your saved messages are with the "Messages you have previously read" messages in the Messages list for the newsgroup. To see them you can use the Search feature to search your messages for the ones that are from you. These messages will be kept for the number of days that you have indicated in the "Days to Hold Msgs" option for the newsgroup.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I just downloaded the newsgroup list from my news server, but the list only goes down to the "r"s, in other words, it ends at rec.arts.bonsai. Where are the rest ("s" through "z") of the newsgroups?

A: If you are using Windows 3.x or Workgroup for Windows 3.1x, this is a limitation of the Windows list box. All of the entries are in the list, but they can not all be listed in the box. You should be able to use the "Search or Specify:" feature to search for all of the items in the list. This has never been reported to be a problem with Win95/98

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I moved OUI from my C: drive to my D: drive last night, but now OUI can't find its data files.

A: This is normal behavior with a database program. When you move the program, you will also have to update the [Paths] section of the NAV20.INI file to reflect the new location of your OUI\\DATA files. First, exit out of OUI. Then open the NAV20.INI file in a text editor such as Notepad. Now, edit the directories in the [Paths] section so that they are pointing to the correct directories. Next, save the modified NAV20.INI file and then restart OUI.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I want to highlight all the entries in a listbox. How can I do this in OUI?

A: Click once in the listbox (so that the listbox has the 'focus') and then press the "/" key while holding down the "control" key.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is there a way to mass-delete saved messages without having to open each one and then delete it?

A: You can use standard Windows commands (e.g., click on one entry, press the "shift" key, and click on another entry to mark all messages between the two) to mark the group of message headers for the messages you wish to delete, then right-click with your mouse on the message header list, and select 'Delete selected messages' from the pop-up menu.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Why is it that I sometimes have headers marked for download in the 'Outgoing' section, but I never marked those specific headers?

A: When you download a header/message, this is a feature, not a bug, it allows you to continue to follow a thread that you have indicated an interest in). OUI will automatically mark subsequent headers/messages in that thread for downloading. To stop this process, you will need to delete that header from the Header list.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: There are some headers that have the same subject as some messages I have already downloaded, but OUI didn't automatically mark them. I thought OUI was supposed to mark those headers for downloading.

A: OUI will mark every message that is a child of the original message (ie. it was posted as a follow-up to te original message). Then, all children of those messages will be marked, and so on. BUT, just because a message has the same subject as the original doesn't mean that it is related to the original. This may be what you are seeing. Also, this can happen if you don't have one of the children of the original message in your OUI database. If this happens, all children of that child message will be 'orphaned', and will therefore not be marked for download.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I would like to use OUI with the AOL news and mail servers, but I can't figure out how to do this. Can you help?

A: As far as we know, OUI cannot be used with AOL, either in e-mail or newsgroups. Their server information is carefully hidden from the end user, making OUI (or any other newsreader) unusable.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I would like to use OUI to download my Juno e-mail messages. Can I do this?

A: Juno uses a proprietary mail system and does not have SMTP/POP servers. Therefore, you cannot use OUI to connect to Juno; you must use Juno's software. The same is true for any news service that uses a WWW page to access e-mail. OUI is a SMTP/POP client, and cannot retrieve e-mail from a web based server.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When OUI goes online, it sometimes pauses for a minute or two. Why does it do this?

A: Pauses of a few seconds are normal, but pauses of a minute or more are usually indicative of a server problem. These pauses occur when OUI is waiting for the server to send us the requested information. If the information doesn't get received, OUI can become confused and just wait there. Please contact your ISP and let them know that there *may* be a problem with their server. We use the word "may" because pauses may also be caused by line noise.

In Windows 95/98, look in the task bar for the Dial Up Network icon, to see if there is any activity (ie. lights blinking). If there is no activity, you might want to cancel your connection and re-dial to see if you get a "more active" connection.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I want to use the Task Agent feature so that I don't have to download all the message headers in a newsgroups, but OUI is downloading all of the headers anyway. Is OUI broken?

A: No, OUI is working correctly. Unfortunately, all headers must be downloaded before the agents can function. This is due to the fact that there are no Usenet commands that will allow an offline newsreader to do what OUI needs to do with regard to Agents until the headers have been downloaded. Fortunately, headers download rather quickly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I tried to post a message to a newsgroup, but I got a "POST failed!" error in the Messages list. Double-clicking on that error message brings up a message that says, at the bottom, "Additional information/server response: 441 435 Bad Message-ID". Why didn't my message get posted correctly?

A: This error is caused by an incorrectly typed e-mail address. To fix it, select File|User Information from the main menu and make sure your e-mail address is a valid Internet e-mail address. Next, exit from OUI and then restart OUI.

Note: This error often occurs when a CompuServe user enters their CompuServe e-mail address with a comma instead of a period. Commas are not allowed in an Internet address. If you are going to use your CompuServe address, it will have to be in the form: xxxxxx.xxxx@compuserve.com (e.g. 102404.3530@compuserve.com) Notice the period between the xxxxxx and xxxx instead of the traditional comma (e.g. 102404,3530) used on CompuServe.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: After I finish a NEW online session (which I started by clicking on the NEW button), I see an error message in my e-mail Messages list that says, "Error logging in to POP3 server!!!". Double-clicking on the error message brings up a message that says, at the bottom, "-ERR Password supplied for 'xxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx' is incorrect." What is causing this?

A: This is caused by an incorrect setting in your mailbox's Mailbox Configuration dialog box. Often, it is caused by the "Login:" field containing your full e-mail address, instead of just the login name which is usually the first part of your e-mail address (before the '@' symbol). For example, if your login name is 'bobz', but you enter 'bobz@p2p.com', you will receive the error.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Can I create multiple e-mail mailboxes?

A: Yes, in fact this is one of the features of OUI that is not available in some readers! Select Configuration|Mailboxes from the main menu and then click on the Add button. You can then enter the necessary information for this new mailbox.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: If I want to download all of the message headers in a newsgroup, how can I do this?

A: Just reset the newsgroup's High Message Number (HMN) to 1. To do this, click once on the newsgroup's icon and then click on the Configure button. In the newsgroup's Settings dialog box that pops up, enter a 1 in the "High Message Number" field.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I want to add a new News server to OUI. How do I do this?

A: To add a new news server to OUI, please do the following:

1. Select the '+NG' icon in the OUI toolbar. (Or, select Configuration|Newsgroups from the main menu.)

2. Select the 'Add' button in the Configure Newsgroups dialog box.

3. Select the 'Add Server' button in the Add Newsgroups dialog box.

4. Enter the name or IP address of the news server you want to add into the "NNTP Server" text box. If necessary, enter a Username and Password.

5. Select the 'OK' button when you are finished.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I don't see the +NG button. What can I do to get it back?

A: Exit out of OUI and delete all the .cdx files, the menuadd.* files (ie. menuadd.dbf and menuadd.fpt) and the scrdir.dbf file from the \\oui\\data directory. Then, make sure that you don't have any old versions of the .dll files (ie. oui.dll, imail.dll, inet.dll, and finger.dll) in the \\scripts directory or any subdirectories under it. (You should have just the latest versions of those 4 files in your \\scripts\\oui directory.) Next, open the nav20.ini file in a text editor (such as Notepad) and remove the [Toolbar] section. Then, save the nav20.ini file. Next, restart OUI. Lastly, select Configuration|Toolbar from the main menu and, if you see the +NG button in the left-hand listbox, select it and click on the --> arrow button.

Note: If you still don't see the +NG button in the left-hand listbox, you will need to reinstall OUI.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I try to launch OUI to do a NEW or ACTION online pass, I end up having to start my dialer separately. Why isn't OUI starting the dialer?

A: OUI will not be able to launch the Windows 95 dialer for you automatically since OUI is a 16-bit application and the Windows 95 dialer was not designed by Microsoft to support 16 bit programs. We did build support into OUI so that it will bring up the 'Connect To' dialog box for the Windows 95 dialer when you select the NEW or ACTION button.

Please check your dialer settings from the Windows Control Panel | Internet icon. Make sure that you have the Use AutoDial checkbox selected and that your preferred connection is selected in the drop down list in the Settings section.

OUI will not be able to disconnect the Windows 95 dialer when it is finished. You may want to change the timer settings that the Windows 95 dialer uses so that it disconnects after a short period of time. Otherwise, you will need to manually disconnect the online session by clicking on the 'Disconnect' button.

Windows98 note: Microsoft fixed the deficiency in Win95 referred to above. Windows98 will allow OUI to launch the dial Up Network (DUN) without any outside input from the user. You will still need to set the "disconnect after idle" setting to a short period, since OUI will not automatically disconnect the DUN.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I live in Europe and I want to be able to use the European date format (e.g., 02 Oct. 1996) in my signature files. How can I change the date format?

A: Currently, the date format cannot be changed. We have this on our suggestion list for future versions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is there a way to disable the opening animation? It's pretty and sounds nice, but I am in a hurry and hate waiting for it to finish.

A: Yes, you can disable the animation by selecting Configuration|Environment and then un-checking the "Animate opening splash screen" option.

If you want to avoid the initial screen totally, go to the Properties window for the OUI program icon and change the target program to NAV20.EXE instead of OUISTART.EXE. To get to this window in Windows 3.x, click once on the OUI program icon and then press "alt" "Enter". To get there in Windows 95 or Windows 98, right-click on the OUI program icon, choose Properties from the drop-down menu, and click on the Shortcut tab.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is there a way, or another piece of software, that will allow OUI to run a NEW or ACTION session at a predetermined time ... like Smartmail in NAVCIS?

A: Yes, please take a look at OUI Scheduler. It is available for downloading from this website. Look for the "Registered Users Download" page.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I delete a message that has a file attached to it, does OUI delete the file from the \\DL directory automatically?

A: No, OUI will not delete any files from any of your directores. You will need to do this manually, using program manager or Windows Explorer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: The newsgroup icons are too large on my screen. How do I make them smaller?

A: Select Configuration|Environment from the main menu and choose one of the other options (Small Icons or List Box) from the Object View section at the top of the dialog box.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I click on a blue-highlighted URL (e.g., www.netscape.com) in a downloaded message, nothing happens. What's wrong?

A: It sounds like you don't have a Web Browser set up in OUI. To set one up, select Configuration|Environment from the main menu and then enter the path and file name of your browser in the "Web browser:" field. If you don't know where the browser is located, use the Browse button to search for it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I want to see everything that occurred during the last online session. Where can I find this?

A: If enabled, all online events will be logged to the ocapture.txt file which is in the \\oui\\dl directory. This file can be any size you wish, but if the file is too large, online sessions may become slower. To change the size of the ocapture.txt file, select Configuration|Login Options from the main menu, click on the Advanced Communication Options button, and then change the "Max Size" field. A popular size for this setting is 1024k (1Mb).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do I know which version of OUI I'm using?

A: Select Help|About from the main menu. The OUI version number will be displayed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I need help in a specific OUI dialog box. What is the best way to get help?

A: Most dialog boxes or windows in OUI will have a Help button. In the main OUI toolbar, the Help button has a blue '?'.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I get to a help screen, all I see is a picture. How do I find out more about the items in the picture?

A: Just click on the items in the picture. Most of the pictures in the OUI Help file have 'hyperlink areas'. Clicking on one of these areas will either bring up an explanation of the area/item or another help topic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Some of my newsgroup icons say "Off". How do I turn them "On"?

A: Double-clicking on them will turn them "On", meaning that they will be visited the next time you go online. To turn them "off" again, double-click on them again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I am getting tons of junk e-mail. I think these people are grabbing my e-mail address from messages I post to newsgroups. Is there any way I can use a fake e-mail address in newsgroup messages I write?

A: Yes, you can do this, but there is currently no way to change the address newsgroup-by-newsgroup; it has to be done message-by-message. When you are replying to a message (or creating a new message), click on the Internet Header button (the one that has a piece of paper and a hand on it). Then, just change the address in the "Reply to:" field. You may want to display your real e-mail address in the signature of your messages so that anybody who needs to send a legitimate e-mail to you can. People who grab your e-mail address to send junk mail will usually not go to the trouble of grabbing your address from the messages text.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I use another newsreader, I see that there are hundreds of messages in a specific newsgroup. But the first time I used OUI in the same newsgroup, I only saw 80 messages. Where did they all go?

A: When you first access that newsgroup with OUI, it will show you only the first 100 or so. If you want to see all of the messages, right-click on the newsgroup's icon, choose the Configuration item from the drop-down menu, and then change the High Message Number to 1. After OUI downloads some (or all) of the messages/headers, it will then keep track of all the messages you have looked at. This way, you won't have to see the same messages each time you logon to that newsgroup. Most other newsreaders will show you ALL the messages EACH time, even if you've already looked at them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When I double-click on a message that I've downloaded, I don't see an Internet header. How do I view a message's Internet header?

A: Click on the Internet Header button. It is the button that looks like a dark hand with a piece of paper under it. It's located to the far right of all the other buttons in the message viewer window.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I uninstall OUI?

A: Just run the Unwise.exe file located in your main OUI directory. It should take care of un-installing everything. If the uninstaller can't find the necessary install.log (or if everything isn't uninstalled correctly), you can uninstall OUI by deleting the main OUI directory (usually \\oui) and any of its subdirectories. There aren't any special files copied to any other directory.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
